Ta dahhhhh!

Been wondering why I’ve slacked off on my blog? Well wonder no more!

I’ve been working on this deck of tarot cards inspired by Karen Marie Moning’s Fever Series. I finally finished them in April and Karen previewed a couple of them on her blog.
Check them out…KMM Blog /Tarot Cards

I'm Back!

Like a proverbial bad penny I am back!
Rather than bore you with the reasons as to why I was gone. I’ll tell you what I’ve been up to in pictures.

Been doing a lil’ traveling…

Stalking the citizens of the planet with my camera….

Also been doing some illustrating for one of my favorite authors.

And working on a deck of tarot cards for the aforementioned author…

A Million Smiles

Something about the woman’s tone irked me …kind of…sort of.
One of my eyebrows flew up and froze into an arch, my eyes had narrowed and my head had tilted slightly to the side. Oh and lawd help me I was smiling but it wasn’t my happy to see ya smile it was my yourethisclose from being told off smile. Yeah I got a smile for every occasion. I’ve got a million smiles.

A group of us were chatting and a friend asked me a question which I partially answered in Spanish.

“Mia, you’re Latina?” the new comer not my friend yet asked.

“Yes” I replied

I’m actually Hispanic there’s a difference but non-Latinos and non-Hispanics rarely know that and I wasn’t in the mood to educate anyone. It was too hot to play teacher.

“I knew you were some kind of minority I just didn’t know what kind!”

“some kind of minority?” I asked incredulously there was something about the way she’d said it that made me want to repeat it over and over again. “Some kind of minority?”

The woman nodded her head, “Yeah I could tell by your coloring but I couldn’t tell if you were an Arab or something like that. I knew you weren’t black but these days you can never tell.

I stared at her and cleared my throat a little and let out a deep throaty laugh a sure sign that I was irked. It was definitely something about the way she said it that irritated me.

“Oh honey I am so not some kind of minority.

“Mia’s a mix of many kind of minorities!” one of my friends interjected.

“You’re damn skippy I am.” I said

“What kind are you ?” she asked

“The nice kind.” I replied and laughed.

“Mia’s of Spaniard, Celt and Arab ancestry on her maternal grandmother’s side, Basque and Spaniard on her maternal grandfather’s side and pure Puerto Rican on her father’s side.” My very knowledgeable friend interjected since I wasn’t offering up my family tree for inspection.

“Oh Basque and Celt like that character in the book,” she said pointing to a paperback she’d been reading, "That’s where you get that scary look from!”

Wtf now I’m scary? Oh wow this female is so winning points with me.

“Scary?”

“Yeah you’ve got this tough chick vibe going on. I was scared of you when I first met you. Your natural body language screams I will kick you ass! You’re very intimidating you know.” she said and then giggled.

“Oh yeah all 4ft 11 of me screams intimidation. People hide when they see me. Entire communities take up torches and pitchforks when I roll into town. ” I rolled my eyes at her.

“There’s something about your eyes. Where did you get them from?” she asked.

“Wal-mart.”

“Seriously Mia where did you get them from? I’m into archeology and history. I have a degree in history this stuff is fascinating.”

“I inherited the eyes from my maternal grandfather.”

“That’s the Basque side right?”

I nodded my head.

“Yeah that’s it it’s your eyes. Throughout history Basques have had a reputation for being fierce it shows in your eyes.”

“Really? Well grrrrrr then.” I said as I bared my teeth at her.

She giggled and then sighed. “Oh Mia it’s been so nice to get to know you. I’m not scared of you anymore! You’re not as scary as you look!”

I nodded my head. “Yeah it’s been a slice of heaven for me too finding out I’m some kind of fierce looking minority that intimates people with my looks.”

She smiled and seemed pleased with herself. I returned it with one of my million smiles but this one didn’t quite reach my eyes.

Ritardo This Is For You…

In a recent post I commented that I’d met someone shorter than me. For those of you new to this blog I’m 4ft 11. My blog buddy Ritardo had this to say about that, “sorry, but I will admit I do like the shorties. My wife is 5 foot even. She hates it but I just don't know why.” Ritardo this one is for you...

You never find adult clothing that doesn’t need to be altered. Even the petite sized jeans need to be cuffed. By the time you're done altering those way cool jeans or slacks it took you forever to find whatever attracted you to them in the first place is long gone. Bell bottoms loose their bells; straight legs lose the ultra skinny leg look. Long sleeves extend over your fingertips and then some. Waist length coats and jackets never end at your waist... thighs is more like it.

Capri pants which are designed to end mid-calf or just below the calf end at your ankles instead…losing all of the Capri-ness in the end. Mini skirts come to your knees…micro minis are minis…and don’t even try to wear an off the rack broom skirt it’s not going to work, you’ll only end up looking like your playing dress up in your mama’s clothes. Oh man and let’s not even get into hosiery! I avoid panty hose because they are so long on me I can actually wear them as a strapless cat suit.

Then there’s the friends who like to tease...they’ll hold their hand out a couple of inches above your head,“you must be this high to enter” they’ll joke. They take photos of your dangling feet whenever you take a seat. No one and I mean no one ever passes the chance to remind you how short you are when they witness you struggling on tippy toes to reach something on a shelf. God love them they can’t help themselves. Oh yeah, then there are the tall male friends who L-O-V-E to physically pick you up and carry your around like a toy. I had a boyfriend one time sneak up behind me while I was talking to some friends lift me off my feet and run down the block with me as if I were some sort of football.

Friends live to give you little pet names pertaining to your lack of height...wittle won…little one…itty bitty....mini me...mini mia…the midget…pocket mia…shorty…short stuff…sweet and low. They look at your small hands and feet and say, “awwww” the only way to find a pair of proper fitting gloves is to buy them in the kid section. Then there’s slow dancing. You have to really careful when slow dancing with anyone over six feet tall because it easily looks like a porn flick in the making. And finally your parents purposely buy you a bed so tall that you have to jump up to get into it just so they can laugh.

Absent Mindness Is A Sign Of Genius

“Is it middle child?” the Barnes & Noble sales clerk asked. We’d been at it for several minutes. I couldn’t remember the title or the author of the book I wanted. Well actually I did remember that it had the word middle in the title. Score one for me, yea Mia.

I’ve always been absent minded. So much so that before I leave the house my mother recites a check list for me,still I always manage to forget something. “No.” I replied,"that's not ringing a bell." I looked up at the ceiling for some reason that always seems to help me think as if the answer it’s going to float down from the heavens and my narrowed eyes will allow me to see it better. “Hmmm middle of the road, middle ground, middletown, middle ages, middle lyrics, middle me this middle me that…” I said as I drummed my freshly manicured nails along my forehead. The clerk laughed. My mind wandered.Hmm I’m glad I cut my nails down they were getting too long. This polish the manicurist chose for me is nice. What did she say the color was again? Nude.

“Middlesex!” I shouted out startling the clerk. “Middlesex?” “You heard me sister. Middlesex, I think.” She laughed again and checked the computer "Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides" Is that the one?” “I can’t know for sure unless I see the book but it’s looking good.” She left and returned quickly with the book. “Yup that's the one!” She opened the book and glanced the liner notes. “Oh this looks good I’m getting it too.” We set the book aside and continued our discussion about recently read books and my attention was drawn to a stack of books near the counter. ooh hello what's this? The cover looks nice . I held up the book, Stephanie Meyer’s “Twilight” “That book is fantastic, I read it in two days. They’re making it into a movie. You’ve gotta get it." I looked over the cover again, opened the book and ran my fingers over the pages. I was sorely tempted but I didn't want to go over my budget. “Mia, It’s on sale.” she whispered in sweet temptation. I shivered. I deal with temptation by yielding to it “I’ll take it.”

I left the store with a little extra bounce in my step swinging the B&N bag over my shoulder. It hit me later on the way home while I star gazed out the bus window. Naturally I had forgotten to buy the one book that I’d been wanting for weeks, Certain Girls by Jennifer Weiner

Damn this absent mindness of mine. Maybe I should invest in..what’s it called again the herbal thingy for memory loss? Geko...no wait that’s a lizard...geico..no that’s insurance. What is it again? Rocky Balboa! Hell no! That’s a boxer. Focus female…Ginko Bilboa! Yeah that’s it…I think. Absent mindness is a sign of genius my mom the woman with a 160 IQ is fond of telling me. Yeah sure mom if that were true I wouldn’t have failed college math…three times.

WARNING: This person has been known to have flashes of brilliance.

My professor wanted to know what made me decide to pursue a degree in social work after having earned a BA in Forensic Psychology.

- With a degree in social work in addition to my psych degree I’d be able to help many more people as opposed to just being a forensic psychologist.

- No! No! I want to know what drew you to psychology and social work. What ignited your passion!

- Hitler, Anne Frank, and intolerance.

she looked confused.
- What?

- Well…Hitler is the perfect example of what intolerance leads to. Anne Frank was the antithesis of that. She was proof that even in the face of adversity the human spirit is resilient. I want to nurture that spirit in people help them over come their adversities. After all each person is a universe, if you can save one person you save a universe.

she looked at me as if she were seeing me with new eyes.

- Oh my God Mia, that was brilliant!

I shyly smiled at her and felt myself blushing….

- Well uh yeah, thank you.

Every now and then during class I’d catch her looking at me as if I had a third head or something. Maybe I should wear a sticker on my ass that says: WARNING: THIS PERSON HAS BEEN KNOWN TO HAVE FLASHES OF BRILLIANCE. FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY MAINTAIN A DISTANCE OF AT LEAST 4 FEET FROM THE SUBJECT.

Getting To Know Me...

Not that they leave any evidence behind in the form of comments but this blog seems to have a pretty steady stream of readers. Recently one of the regulars suggested doing an interview with me because I have zip about myself in the “all about me” section. We got in touch with a few other readers and they came up with a list of questions… here we go.

1: Why did you get into blogging?
I was stressed out, had a major paper due, and was nursing a major case of writer’s block. I thought that blogging about stuff going on around me would help with the writer’s block and it did. Ever since then I use the blog to keep my mind limber. It really has helped me in terms of writing school papers. It never occurred to me that people would actually read this blog.

2: What are your hobbies?
Other than harassing my mother? Photography, reading, music, writing and I’m a video game addict.

3: It seems like you’ve been in school forever, what’s your major?
It feels like I’ve been in school forever! I started wanting to get into immigration law so I got an AA by the time I was ready to graduate I had decided to go into forensic psychology. A few weeks before getting my BA in that area a professor gave me some advice. She suggested I pursue a degree in social work because it would open more doors for me than just a BA in forensic psych. I took her advice and after graduating last may decided to get a BA in social work as well. I should be done by next year and then it’s on to grad school.

And then?
The Peace Corp for a few years and then back home to start my non-profit work. There are more options available to you in the PC if you have a Master’s degree.

4: How would you describe yourself?
Shy with a dash of sarcasm and a jigger of wit.

5: Have you ever offended anyone with something you’ve written?
Just one. Look my attitude is this I don’t ask you to read my blog. Everything I blog about happens to be the truth. If the truth offends you then that’s your issue not mine and this blog is not for you.

6: What has been the most outrageous thing you’ve ever said?
The list is endless. I met a guy once who thought he was God’s gift to women.Totally oblivious to the fact that I wasn't into him he took one look at my tats, my piercings and said to me, “I could never get with a girl like you.” OUCH talk about ego bruising! My reply to that was, “Honey, you can never get a girl like me. You may not like me now but trust me an hour from now you will totally love me.” Man that was really cocky of me. I still cringe when I think of it.

7: Favorite place in the world.
That’s a tie. The Sahara Desert and NY's Cathedral of St. John The Divine.

8: What is the best kiss you’ve ever received?
There’s not a singular best kiss instead there are many. What makes them the best is the kisser and the feelings that were part of the kiss.

9: Hottest?
Oh wow that’s easy! A few years ago I was at a party and there was this cute guy there that I'd met via a friend. He had been making it clear for months that he was attracted to me but because my friend had a crush on him I ignored his attempts to hook up. Just as the party was winding down I passed him on my way out of the kitchen and out of no where he grabbed me and pressed me up against the fridge and laid one on me. It was so full of chemistry it made my toes curl, my heart pound and my body feel tingly all over. He looked kind of shook too and mumbled something about his knees feeling weak. I quickly pulled away from the guy and he grabbed me again telling me, “I took a 3 hr ride to this party just to see you, no one else but you.” I can’t front I melted and when he laid the next one on me I returned it full force. It was amazing! Mucho caliente! Then reality hit and I remembered my friend and her crush and made it a point to never see him again.

10: If you could be lint from a dryer screen, what kind of lint would you want to be?
Joaquin Phonenix’s.

11: If there was a worm in one of the pieces of fruit that you drunken "steal",& you bit it in half, would you continue to finish off the fruit or would you spit it out?
Depends on how drunk I was! Na I'd spit it out probably end up barfing too. That’s actually happened to me but I was sober. I was in Salem and someone handed me an apple fresh off the tree. I had eaten half of the apple and saw something wiggling. To this day I’m not sure if I ate some of the worm or not. Anyway I had a mini heart attack spit the apple out and ran to shore and started washing my mouth out with the sea water. Then it hit me that I was rinsing my mouth out with lord knows how many forms of bacteria and my stomach did a weird twisty churning thing and I puked every apple out I had ever eaten in my life. To this day I’m kind of leery when biting into a granny smith.

12: Do you watch Japanese flicks & then imitate the dubbed actors by moving your mouth & then uttering only 1 or 2 words?
Yup. I watch a lot of foreign flicks and am known for creating my own dialogue on the spot.

13: Bikini’s or thongs?
Bikini’s. I don’t like nothing wedged in my butt that’s not supposed to be there.

14: I’ve noticed all your BF’s have been tall. Do you only date tall guys?
Listen at 4ft 11 pretty much every guy with the exception of Verne Troyer (mini me) is taller than me. The fact that the majority of my BF’s have been 6ft and over has been a coincidence. I once broke up with a guy who was just too tall for me. He was 6ft 8 and every time we hugged it looked like the makings of porn flick. Not too mention the poor guy was starting to get neck & back problems from having to dip down every time he wanted to kiss me.

15:What’s your kryptonite?
MGM Musicals. Man I have loved them all my life. If you shout titles at me I can sing you a couple of songs from each one. My personal favorites are My Fair Lady and The King & I.

16: What would you like written on your tombstone?
“About this whole death thing… ehhh it doesn’t make my nipples tingle.”

Note: I know i'm going to have this song stuck in my head for the next few days...

Getting To Know You –The King & I

Because I can

A great big Bronx shout out to Emory I got this video off of his blog.

My time at home is dwindling by this time next year I’ll be off in another country as part of the Peace Corp. People often ask me why…why the Peace Corp? Why do I mentor? Why do I volunteer? So much curiosity when there really is no need to ask the questions. I serve because I can …I serve for all the reasons shown in this video.

6 Things

I saw this on 6 weird things about me thingy on Aisha’s blog and had been meaning to do it for awhile b/c lord knows you guys don’t know enough about me…lol

1.I wear colorful socks with everything. It doesn’t matter how casual or how dressy the outfit is. Lift up my pants leg and you will find a pair of psychedelic funky socks underneath.

2.I don’t like store bought birthday cakes I prefer my mom’s home made cakes. Every other item in the bakery I am cool with it’s just the birthday cakes don’t thrill me. I prefer home made cake it doesn’t have to be from scratch, a cake mix will do I guess it’s there’s just something special about all those mysterious and hard to pronounce artificial flavorings, colors, and preservatives that adds a little kick to the cake.

3.I laugh in my sleep. People have always told me that I must dream some pretty hysterical stuff from the quality of my laughter.

4.I can’t fall asleep unless there is music playing. I keep it at a respectable volume but if you walk by my room late at night you’ll be serenaded by my current favorites.

5. I don’t need an alarm clock to tell me it’s time to wake up. No matter how late I go to bed my body’s natural alarm clock wakes me up at 6 every morning whether I need to be up that early or not.

6.I love to dance. I often break out and dance regardless of my surroundings or who is watching.

We all grow up at our own pace

We all grow up at our own pace. Ever since I hit my mid-teens the women in my family have been trying to get me to girly up you know wear make-up, high heels etc. I’m a tomboy at heart my daily wear consists of lip gloss, sneakers, jeans, and casual blouses and it drives my Aunt Nora nuts.

While Christmas shopping I found myself seduced by a pair of inexpensive pointy toed(see photo above) stiletto heeled knee high boots. It was love at first sight. When I declared my love for the boots my mother looked at me as if I were crazy she’d heard this before. My closet is filled with high heels that I swore to love only to abandon them after one wearing due to the discomfort of walking in heels. However there was something about these boots. I could sense this pair of boots was different. I felt a bond between us.

I tried the boots on they felt as if they were made for me. Still my mother was not convinced. “Walk around in them.” she said. I guess now would be the time to mention that I don’t know how to walk in heels. I’ve never mastered the skill. As I took my first tentative steps I fully expected to bust my ass in the middle of the shoe store but I didn’t. I’m telling you those heels were made for me. I walked around the store shopping for 45 minutes in them heels. Several women even complemented me on the boots. When I asked them if I was walking like Frankenstein’s monster in them they assured me I wasn’t. I ended up purchasing the boots and their lovely cousin the matching handbag. Yeah people I actually purchased something besides a knap sack and a messenger bag and I actually found myself admiring some lipstick at the make-up counter, Aunt Nora pinched herself thinking it was all a dream. I feel like such a grown up now.

Mia:The Brain Washer

Everytime I think about it makes me chuckle. I’ve been called many things in my life to my face and behind my back but a bad influence and brain washer have never been among them…

Let’s start from the beginning shall we? Oh yes we shall. A couple of semesters ago I met this chick at school named Angela. The few heads that read this blog on the regular may remember me mentioning her a few times. We hit it off right away because we both had the same major and similar career goals. Her personal life was a mess and I became sort of a mentor to her someone for her to talk to. I am part of a program that mentors abused women and got Angie involved in the program. I felt that the program would be beneficial to her as well as therapeutic. When her mother found out that she had joined the mentoring program she got mad and asked why couldn’t Angie mind her own business. Then Angie told her mother that she was going to follow my foot steps and join the Peace Corps her mom was heated and said I was a bad influence. There ya have it people I am a bad influence. I wish I gave a flying pickle as to the mothers' opinion of me and maybe this way I wouldn't find it so funny because my father is burnt...yet I don't. Who knew that encouraging a friend to be less self-centered and show empathy for others, and to do something to help the less fortunate is right up there with encouraging your friend to shoot heroin between her toes and to sprinkle cocaine on her raisin bran.

We had a program meeting early this morning so Angie got up earlier than usual for a Saturday. Her father was livid that she had gotten up early to attend this meeting and told her I was brain washing her. Holy crap I am like a cult leader now wtf? Fear me people I have the power to brain wash as a matter of fact point me to Washington power like this should not be wasted on peons like college students! Now y’all need to be wary that I don’t start serving spiked kool-aid at UN confrences.

If his past actions are any indication of his mindset I expect to be followed around by a private detective pretty soon. Oh yeah and I imagine that when he finds out Angie is bouncing to the Peace Corps with me he’ll probably have a hit put out on me which is why I may need to go into hiding as soon as I stop laughing over this.

Addictions

I was reading a post by one of my favorite bloggers Papillona Sky on addiction and it got me thinking about my own addictions and how they are a part of my life like a monkey on my back. I decided to share some of them with you. Maybe you and I share addictions.

I am addicted to.... music. I think if someone wanted to torture me the most effective way to do it would be to deny me access to music.

I am addicted to...
photogragphy.

roller coasters.

books.

writing.

scented candles.

walking in the rain.

dancing. I can never understand people that don’t dance. Dancing is a chance to release it all.

cologne. Nice smelling cologne, soft not over powering. Something like Cool Water or Burberry. I will follow a man to the end of the world if he smells good…lol I never leave my house without splashing a little on. Key word being little No one should be able to smell you before you enter a room or get a headache because of your cologne. Most importantly the cologne should not be masking the aroma of ass if you get my drift.

Smile when you say that...

I recently ended a year long relationship for reasons better left unsaid despite what he may think. Now the guy thinks I am a bitch. What moi a bitch?! I know I was shocked too! Not really. Why is it that whenever we stand up for ourselves and decide that something is not working and walk way we are called bitches? I mean if that’s what passes as the definition of the word bitch in the male kingdom then yeah I am a bitch. Smile when you say that! So for the next guy that crosses my path I offer this insight as to who I am. Maybe I should've called this post 10 steps to Mia...

1)I like who I am period before you start criticizing me, my relationship with my parents and family take a good look at yourself and make sure you’re not criticizing me out of jealousy. Instead of criticizing it take a good look at it. They say you can tell a lot about a person by the way they treat their parents. To me my parents are my God I worship them, I respect them and admire them. Their wisdom, examples, love, and care has made me the woman I am today.

2) My friends are my friends. I can point out when they've messed up to their face; I can tell them off when they irk me. You can not. I can do that because I’ve wiped their tears and fought their battles when they’ve needed me to. You have not logged in the years that I have with them. They may not be perfect but I love them. You at least should show them some respect.

3) I am friendly and love being around people but I also crave, enjoy and revel in solitude. It gives me a chance to renew my batteries. Don’t get offended or upset because there comes a day when I do not want to leave the comfort of my home. Understand my need for meditation. There are times when I will sit still for the longest of times and not utter a word simply because I have nothing to say. It has nothing to do with you. It may drive you nuts that I can withdraw into myself leaving you with just the shell of who I am as I escape into the welcomed solitude of my thoughts. It has nothing to do with you. Sometimes a chick just needs a little down time.

4) I believe in expressing how I feel not holding back and I encourage you to do the same at all times. Do not wait to tell me in August about something that I did in June that upset you the time to speak was then. Don’t hold onto your anger just let it go.

5) I will fight for the rights of others yet I hate to fight. Picking a fight with me is pointless. I refuse to resort to arguing to get my point across when a simple dialogue will do. If you insist on arguing with me prepared to get laughed at and watch me walk away. I can never keep a straight face when dealing with someone whose face is all contorted in rage.

6) Trust me as I trust you. If you are a part of my romantic life that means that I have placed my trust in you. Do not try to project your insecurities onto me. When I say someone is my friend take my word for it just as I take yours. There is no need to go running behind my back asking that person or interviewing my friends and family as to the nature of my relationship with my friend. I already told you and my word should suffice. I am not into playing games. When someone is in my heart I have no eyes for another. When I love you whether it be platonic or romantic I will love you with all I am. My love is unconditional and does not need it’s ego to be stroked in order to be kept alive. However please be aware that I have a big heart that has the capacity to love many people in many different ways. As such be prepared for the fact that no one ever really leaves my life. Some of my dearest friends are former boyfriends. Insecurity is not necessary; they are ex’s for a reason so please don’t be intimidated by my friendships with them. If I were still interested in them you wouldn’t be around.

7) Don’t try using jealousy as a way to keep me by your side. When I don’t want to be kept nothing will tie me to you. Jealous? I am not the type. Don’t try to fan something in me by swooning over some other woman and describing how she fawned over you in an attempt to arouse jealousy in me. It will not work. Not because I don’t care about you but instead because I refuse to hold onto someone who needs to be constantly reassured of their place in my heart. If my word is not enough then by all means run to the person who fawns over you. As a matter of fact I’ll hold the door open for you as you leave. This goes back to # 6 on my list. If there is no trust then why be with someone?

8) Me loving you does not make you the center of my life. Before I met you I had a life an enjoyable and vibrant one. I am not one of those females with heaving bosoms breathlessly awaiting the arrival of their man. I do not need nor want to see you every day; I do not need to talk to you 100 times a day. You and I were not born joined at the hip. My twin died along time ago. Please by all means continue to live the life you had before you met me. Please don’t expect me to stop living mine.

9) Do not ever in your wildest dreams attempt to resort to physical violence to keep me in place. Number one I fight back. Number two you do not know my uncles. They keep baseball bats and plastic garbage bags in the trunk of their cars for moments like that.

10 ) Please be aware that no matter what time of the night, no matter where I am or with whom I am if a friend in need calls me I will fly to their side. Never ever try to make me choose between you and my friends. Also know that if you ever need me day or night I will move mountains to be by your side as well.

That covers the basics as to who I am in a nut shell. Hopefully the next guy I come in contact with won't be intimidated by the total package and attempt to bend and twist me into his idea of what a woman should be. If he does he will be met with resistance and shown the door. I am simply me simply Mia accept me warts and all as I accept you and we should get along fine.

Mia Then and Now

Opinionatedinjerzee started up this meme and Champ has tagged me for it as well. Yes I was a child of the '90's loving the look of hats well into my late teen years.

I was 8 years old in the photo. I don't think I will ever live this outfit down. I picked it out all by myself. I had an obsession with that damn hat, I wore it every where! Come to think of it I had one in every color they made!

And here I am all grown up and it's been years since I've worn a hat.

My Dreams

My dreams often leave a strong impression on me and it is my belief that they are a reflection of what’s going on in my life. They often play out like movies; the cinematography dazzles.Something along the lines of an Ang Lee film. This week my dreams have left me with a feeling of peace. They've also left me with a feeling that something new is headed my way something wonderful I can feel it, something life changing it’s either that or the pizza I just had for lunch, take your pick.

I was awakened at 3:00 am by the smell of flowers and freshly cut grass.I'd gone to bed exhausted so the fact that anything could awaken me was amazing. The sudden appearance of the scent startled me, I sat up in bed and gladly breathed it in. After a few seconds the scent was gone just as suddenly as it had come.I laid back down and snuggled into my blanket. I closed my eyes and felt myself drift off. In my dream I saw a light so bright it hurt my eyes to look at it directly. I could see neither nothing around it nor beyond it just the light. Then all of a sudden I heard a man’s gentle voice say, “Everything will be alright.” And I awoke.I actually had a smile on my face and I felt so peaceful, I felt free.

Later on during the day I was on the subway with Reina on our way to school to pay next semester’s tuition. The dandelion seeds being blown all over The Bronx like little parachutes were just too much for my allergies, my eyes were irritated. I laid back my head and closed my eyes just to rest them. I must have drifted off for a second. I saw a long haired man dressed in white he was standing in front of me inches from my face. He looked into my eyes and laid his hand on my head then he leaned in and kissed my forehead. It was a gentle kiss the kind a father lays on his child. My eyes flew open and I jumped up and said, “Oh shit! Reina I’m going to die that’s it I am going to die!” My sudden movement and the look on my face made Reina laugh, “What?!” I placed my hand on her arm and said, “It’s official final’s week has made me crazy! I am going crazy!" I told her what had happened and she looked at me and moved away from me, “Hey! You’re not supposed to move away, you’re supposed to move closer and comfort me!” The damn slore thought it was hysterical me losing my mind at such a young and tender age. I’ll get her back, I feel a rash of how do you keep an idiot in suspense moments coming on.

20 Things You Don't Know About Me

I was tagged by Champ for this meme.

20 Things You Don’t Know About Me

1. Despite my parents being born and raised in New York, Spanish was my first language I didn’t learn English until I was 5 and had to be placed in Bilingual Education. My grandmother felt it was important for me to learn Spanish first she didn’t want me to be like my dad and his family who barely spoke the language.

2. I am very shy.

3. I love motorcycles

4. I love history and archeology

5. I rarely wear shoes, 99 percent of the time I am in sneakers.

6. I went to a dinner party at Geraldo Rivera’s house when I was around 13 and watched him stare all night at my much older friend Carmen’s (she was 20) huge bosom all night. He looked especially thrilled whenever she would laugh and her boobies would jiggle.

7. I tended bar one night at a charity event and spent the night serving booze to the likes of Edward James Olmos despite the fact I was a minor and not old enough to drink.

8. I carry a couple of bucks in change in my back pack with me to hand out to the homeless people I come across every day. As a result I jingle when I walk.

9. My hands are so small I have to wear children’s gloves.

10. I once dreamt with God I couldn’t see him in my dream it was too bright, but I heard his voice. We had a conversation about life in general and when I woke up suddenly I had the only smile on my face.

11. I have a passion for roller coasters.

12. I wear cartoon character socks with everything.

13. I have a huge collection of hooded sweat jackets, my uncle Hassan hates everyone of them.

14. I have a huge collection of cartoon character pj bottoms which uncle Hassan also hates.

15. I wear my hooded sweat jackets and cartoon character pj bottoms as an outfit to walk around in the ‘hood because I know it drives uncle Hassan crazy and aunt Nora and Said love it when I do. They love the fact that I get away with driving him crazy…lol It’s pay back for walking around in his tighty whities when I stay over their house. He knows it grosses me out to see him in his drawers.

16. I get physically ill if I eat breakfast first thing in the morning.

17. My favorite colors are red and white.

18. I hate bananas

19. If a fly lands on my food I won’t eat it. BTW I meant the food not the fly. Wait I won’t eat the fly either… oh you know what I mean!

20. My feet are so small I wear kid’s sneakers.

Intimidating eyes...

The other day a classmate mentioned that she had been in one of my classes last semester but had been afraid to talk to me. She said that I come off as an intimidating person but now saw that I was not that way at all and was glad that we had become friends.

Thank you that's really nice of you. Wait a minute did she say I was intimidating? WTF? Me intimidating? Heffa is crazy she better lay off that ganja it’s messing with her brain. I am not intimidating.

Then another girl from our group threw in her two cents. She said when she first met me she’d been intimidated by me as well. That I come across as thugette, someone that’d make you swallow your teeth just for looking at her the wrong way.

WTF?! Wench mind yo' business, when I want your opinion I will beat it out of you. I am not intimidating...I am soft and cuddly...I am a pooh bear, dagnaf it!

The fact that my classmate thought I was intimidating kind of hurt my feelings. It’s not the first time I’ve heard that. Now I know how Frankenstein’s monster felt. I looked over my shoulder expecting the villagers to come out with lit torches and pitch forks. People have these preconceived notions about me. I asked my mom about this whole intimidating crap….

Mia: What do you mean I am intimidating?

Mom: It has something to do with your eyes.

Mia: My eyes?! People always tell me I have nice eyes ma.

Mom; You do, you have beautiful eyes but la mirada nena; the way you look at people it’s like you can see through them. It's like your reading them. Then again it could be your tattoos. The tattoos combined with your eyes make you look like a bad ass. You look like you were born wearing leather diaper, with a cigarette hanging out of your mouth and a formula bottle full of Jack Daniel’s in your hand.

Okay I can’t front I do love leather. I have a decent selection of leather jackets, ripped jeans and Timberland boots…I’m not into that whole bandana thing…..anymore...and she's right when I look at people I tend to really look at them. I check out their body language, their aura, the vibe I pick up off of them. I pay attention to all that stuff. In effect I guess I am reading them.

Mia: I don’t flash my tattoos in school I keep them covered up.

Mom: Then it’s gotta be the eyes.

Mia: Umm gee thanks ma …

Mom: Sweetheart it’s not a diss. The eyes are the window to the soul. You wear you’re personality on your face.

My personality on my face..WTF is this woman saying that I have the face of a Mafia hitman? Okay it’s obvious I’m never going to get to the root of this so called intimidation factor I possess. Mom is not going to be able to help me with this one.

Mom: You don’t hide anything; you’re not about lies and games. You’re a straight forward person and if someone doesn’t have all their shit together of course they are going to be intimidated by you… You’re a strong woman and that scares the shit out of some people.

No, no help at all on this one…maybe she’s right maybe it is the eyes. I love that woman ….I can do no wrong in her eyes, I am perfection to her. The woman is bonkers, I am so lucky to have her as my mom.

I guess I’m like those anorexics that look in the mirror and see a distorted picture of themselves. I see myself as a little fluffy teddy bear sporting a big pink bow while everyone else sees a bad ass. I’m going with my mother’s theory, I have intimidating eyes.

A Rose For My Sister...

My world has always been like a soap bubble, coloful, resilient and full of beauty. I sit inside of its protective walls gliding along the sky, skipping clouds, skimming the tops of pink roses, flying so close to the heavens I feel as if I can touch rainbows with my fingertips.

Occasionally the ugliness of the world has attempted to penetrate my bubble only to be deflected away by my bubble's polymer-like shield. I look around me and wonder how is it that I have been so blessed when others have been cursed. There have been times in my life where people have claimed that I have a guardian angel watching over me, if so I owe an apology to the angel for making it work overtime. How is it possible that the angels have smiled on me from the day I was born while allowing my twin sister to slip away?

She was born first my father said she seemed to be waiting for me anxious for me to join her. Only when I emerged did she seem to relax. We were identical. When ever we were separated our heart monitors would reflect the stress of the separation. We reached for each other, staring at at each other intently oblivious to the world around us. We shared a crib because we cried when seperated. In our sleep we'd snuggle up to each other often sucking on each others fists. One morning without warning she was gone. For awhile it looked as if I would be leaving as well. The doctors prepared my parents for the fate that seemed to await me. I often think about her and wonder what she would've have been like.

A rose placed on our dining room table caught my eye. The rose bud had been accidentally ripped off of its stem by a little boy trying to pick a flower for his aunt. It was this rose that brought her to my mind. It was March 31st, it would've been our 23rd birthday had we not decided to make our debut in December. The rose lay on the table it's pink petals falling off around it. I reached for my camera determined to capture her beauty on film. As I photographed the rose I thought of my sister; would she have liked photography too? The rose presented here is for my twin sister Catherine Elizabeth a rose that never got to fully bloom...

To sleep, perchance to dream...

I’ve been having the weirdest dreams lately but the one I had last night is going to cause someone to smack me upside the head today. I’ve already started getting dirty looks and have been asked what’s in my coffee and if I've smoked any wicked wicked weed today. No I have not thank you very much...people just say no to drugs! I rarely have nightmares, 99.9 % of the time my dreams are happy, sometimes they have complete soundtracks other times I wake up laughing. I also tend to dream a lot in vibrant colors.

Last night I had a dream that’s left me with lingering side effects. At one point in my dream the Mia in the dream turned and spoke to me the real Mia. It was as if you were watching TV and all of the sudden the character stops in the middle of the show and turns to the camera and starts talking to you specifically.

My dream took place inside a cabaret club. The little bistro tables had these beautiful cream colored satiny table cloths. The chairs were wood with leather padding the same color as the table cloths. The floor was was black and so shiny you could see yourself in it. I remember thinking diablo somebody can really bust their ass dancing on that floor. There was a lot of smoke in the place it seemed everybody and their mama was smoking. I was sitting at the table with several friends. None of whom I know in real life by the way but they seemed like really nice people. Each of us had a drink in front of us, mines was an amber color. There was some nice jazz music playing in the back ground.

All of a sudden an emcee took the stage and announced the name of a performer ( I couldn’t make it out) the room went dark and out of the shadows into the waiting spotlight stepped a young girl well she was actually a lady but made up to look younger than her actual age. She was dressed as Judy Garland’s “Dorothy” in the Wizard of Oz and began singing “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” I was totally amazed by her impersonation of her and as she got half way through the song the dream Mia turned and spoke to sleeping Mia. She said,” Man I didn’t know I knew all the words to this song!”

“Dorothy” then left the stage and an older Judy came back and went through an entire repertoire of Judy Garland songs that spanned her career. Dream Mia turned to her friends and exclaimed aloud, “Man she is fantastic! I wonder if Liza Minelli knows about her?” When she was done singing I stood up and gave her a standing ovation and awoke. I now am driving everyone around me crazy me I can’t get “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” out of my head and have been singing it since 6 am. Good lord it’s going to be a long day. Oh yeah did I mention I'm doing an impression of Judy Garland as I sing it? Yup yup it's gonna be a long day...lol
