If I'd Been a Good Girlfriend

The Yeti (my boyfriend) was upset. Again. The bone of contention on today’s menu was called Mia’s Trip to Italy 2009 and it couldn’t possibly have any meat left on it in my opinion. Ever since I’d informed him of my trip weeks earlier the bone had been trotted out on a regular basis. I was tired of the damn bone already and silently wished he’d choke on it.

A couple of years ago a friend and I had talked about going to Europe together and she’d never forgotten the conversation so when the opportunity arose for her to spend 2 weeks in Italy this summer visiting her aunt she jumped on it with me in mind. She knows I have an insane love of adventure and felt that she’d enjoy the trip more if I was with her.

At first I declined but I couldn’t resist her puppy dog eyes for long and gave in besides this was the chance to experience something new. Now that I was on board the 2 week Italy trip had morphed into something else and she was really excited. I suggested we spend a couple of days in Ireland, hop over to London hang out for a few days there with a friend of mine then head out to Amsterdam for a day meet up with some more of my friends and then spend the remaining time in Italy and Rome . We’d take only what we could carry in a back pack and ferry and bus it to where ever we wanted to go. She left all the planning and details to me which was why I was checking out ferry schedules and hostels in Ireland on my computer when the Yeti approached me.

“Why a hostel instead of a hotel?” he asked.

“We want to meet people. It’ll make enhance the experience but the way it’s looking now it’ll be actually cheaper to stay in hotels.”

I looked up at him and beamed, “I’m going to have to get a few more lenses and another memory card before I go. Ireland alone is a photographers dream.”

He frowned. My Yeti however was not happy about my plan to spend 2 weeks away from him. The Yeti’s insecurity was rearing its ugly head and I’d had enough.

“You can cheat on me out there!” he yelled at me when I demanded to know what his problem with the trip was.

I was truly shocked. Then it dawned on me that he’d had no problem with me going off to spend the summer with my family in Egypt but then of course my mom would be on that trip and I’d be surrounded by aunts and uncles…built in chaperones so to speak. And that’s when I really got mad, really mad and a bit hurt too. I have never given this man a reason not to trust me.

A good girlfriend I suppose would have taken the time to soothe him, to lay his insecurities to rest. I wasn’t in good girlfriend mode that day I was more like in you have pissed me off and insulted me mode. So without missing a beat I narrowed my eyes, looked him in the eye and calmly replied…

“And you will never know if I do cheat on you because what happens in Italy stays in Italy… unless Valerio decides to open his luscious mouth.”

“Who’s Valerio?!” he asked outraged. He looked as if he were mentally compiling a list of my foreign friends trying to recall if I’d ever mentioned a Valerio.

A good girlfriend would have stepped in and told him she didn’t know anyone named Valerio, that she actually didn’t have any friends in Italy. But remember I was not in good girlfriend mode so I didn’t do any of that. Instead I got up from my seat and walked away singing an old Italian love song called "Al Di La" which by the way I am clueless as to how I know the lyrics in Italian no less.

“Mia, who the hell is Valerio?” he asked again but instead of responding in good girlfriend mode I began to sing louder stopping only to wink at him just before I closed the door behind me.

I want to buy you a toe ring

My boyfriend Josh had been sick for several days and none of the over the counter medications he was popping seemed to be helping. The fact that he had unused sick days and personal days didn’t matter to his boss. The boss man was in a foul mood and totally unsympathetic to my boyfriend’s plight he refused to let him leave early to see a doctor. “ You should have taken care of this while you were on vacation!” was his response.

Who the hell can schedule illness and can they teach me ? Please let me know so I can set up my next bout with the flu for a time when I don’t have finals and papers that need to be done.

After work Josh headed straight to the emergency room of the hospital nearest to his job. He wasn’t even there for 5 minutes when the doctors decided that he needed to admitted. After pumping him full of drugs and pain medication they left him alone with his cell phone in a cubicle while they arranged a room for him. I was about to head out to the hospital when I got this call....

Caller: I want to buy you a toe ring.

I stared at the phone. Who the hell was this? Had some slurried voiced person found Josh’s cell phone in the hospital and decided to crank call his fav 5? Then slurried voice spoke again and I recognized it. It was Josh and he was high as a kite.

Josh: I want to buy you a toe ring.

Mia: (laughing) Ok

Josh: I want to buy you a toe ring.

Mia: Ok

Josh: You have pretty toes.

Mia: Okayyyyyyy

That comment reminded me of the time I went on a date with this guy who after noticing my sandal encased feet wanted to take me to home to lick ice cream off my toes, he even offered to let me pick the flavor.

Mia: You don’t have a foot fetish do you?

For a second I imagined my shoes slowly disappearing from my closet hidden away to be lovingly caressed in secret.

Josh: No you just have pretty toes. I want to buy you a toe ring.

Then I remembered he had a 104 point something fever plus was filled with enough pain meds to take down a horse. Stuff like that tends to make a person a tad loopy. Besided this was Josh we were talking about, 2 watered down drinks at the local bar and he’s roasted.

Josh: I want to buy you a toe ring.

I decided it wasn’t the time to tell him I owned several toe rings. He’d probably want me to model them at the hospital.

Mia: Okay

Josh: Mia?

Mia: Yes, Joshua?

Josh: You have pretty toes.

Mia: (sigh) Thank You.

2 Peas in a Pod

About seven months ago I met a guy. A sweet guy a romantic guy. The type of guy that dedicates songs to you out of the blue. The kind of guy who surprises you with your favorite flowers for no particular reason other than when he saw them he thought of you . He even gives you 6 of them one for every month you’ve been seeing each other.

Seven months ago he asked me out on a date. My response to that was to whip out my phone and take a picture of him. I‘d ended a relationship months earlier and wasn’t too sure if I wanted to jump back into the dating pool. I really didn’t trust my judgment when it came to men at that moment. When I got home I showed my mom the picture and asked for her opinion. “ He has a kind face. Take the chance go for it!” then she added, “You know nena he kind of looks like your father! “ Ma that is so twisted.” I said, but despite that and on my mother’s advice I went out on a date with the guy. It turned out to be a smart move and one of the longest dates known to man.

At one point in our date he decided to show me a picture of his niece and siblings. Like me he is very big into family and as I would discover later on friends as well. Right next to the photo of his niece was a photo of him and a group of friends. It turned out I knew every single person in the photo with him, we had all gone to high school together. He ended up calling every body up in the photo and they joined us on our date. It became a mini-high school reunion that lasted until the evening of the following day. The thing was we didn’t remember each other at all from high school despite the fact that we had so many common friends until one of the girls started prompting our memories. I had been on the tennis team with her …”Mia was the girl that refused to wear the tennis uniform! Remember the one who played all her matches in jeans and timberland boots?!” “The anime girl!” he responded. Here’s the thing I have oxymoron eyes. They’re big yet chinky and when I wear my hair straight with bangs people always say I look like a Japanese anime because of my eyes. In high school at least until my senior year my hairstyle of choice was bangs and a ponytail. Once he said the anime girl I knew he had at least seen me around in high school.

He had been a football player who missed some school because of a knee injury and as a result was behind me by a year. We had no classes together but he did have classes with and was a close friend of my future best friend Reina so he used to see me with her all the time around the school and it turned out he had had a little crush on me then but was too shy to approach me.

The one thing people always say when meeting him for the first time is that he looks a lot like my father. Personally me and my dad don't see it. It gives me the shivers just to think about it.. ewww.As people get to know him they say that personality wise he reminds them of my dad as well. That my friends is true he is very much like my dad in that sense which is a HUGE departure from the guys i've dated in the past. In past relationships I was always the dependable one so it's nice now to have someone on an equal footing with me.

We were on the elevator last night just talking and out of the corner of my eye I saw one of my neighbors checking us out. Other than a nod hello or a smile this woman and I have never had a conversation. Just as we got to our floor the woman pipes up out of nowhere, “You know he looks JUST like your father! They’re like two peas in a pod!” My BF started laughing because he is so used to this by now. My stomach knotted a little and an “ewww” look clouded my face and then the woman said, “There’s nothing wrong with that honey every little girls first love is her daddy.”
