Matt's recovery...

My brother Matthew amazes me with his resilience and stamina. He’s recovery from the accident he had 2 weeks ago is miraculous. His external injuries are healing nicely. He’s walking around in a double sling due to the fractures to his clavicle, shoulders and torn ligaments. He jokes around that the silver lining behind this accident is that it’s gotten him out of his chores. They’ve put off the neurosurgery off for a few more weeks out of fear of infection. So far the amount of air leaking into his brain b/c of his facial and sinus plate fractures have not increased. He’s taking a boat load of medicine everyday and even though the doctors assure us he is in a great deal of pain he refuses to take the pain killers, he says he doesn’t want to depend on them. Right now we have to take great pains to avoid him catching a cold or from his allergies flaring up b/c the doctor says the discharge from his sinuses can cause him to get meningitis.

Yesterday he had an appointment wit his oral surgeon it’s still too soon to begin work on his mouth. It looks like he will be losing a few more teeth they are not healing as well as we wanted to. But it was expected , the dentist didn’t have much hope for them. They were discussing what they’re going to be doing with the teeth he has left. Most likely he will have some type of bridge and at the rest will be implants. It’s the one thing that has affected Matt the most about the accident. The loss of his teeth, he was always smiling lately he hasn’t been doing much of that he’s really self conscious about his smile now.
He has this big ass infectious smile, huge, it lights up his face. In many ways it’s the smile of a child. He smiles and his eyes get this twinkle in them scrunching up. Whenever he smiles it tends to melt peoples heart no matter how gruff they are they can’t help it they have to smile too.

My parents are worried that our insurance may not cover the costs of implants but they are determined he not have dentures, he’s too young for that and it will change the shape of his mouth, altering his features slightly. My mom joked about selling my dad into prostitution if our insurance doesn’t cover the cost of Matt’s implants.

The police haven’t made any headway into the investigation as to the car that hit him. It looks like the person will never get caught, at least not for running Matt down. We recently went back to the spot where he got hit. He still has no memory of the accident. It’s amazing that he survived he showed us where he was walking with his bike when he got hit and where he regained consciousness. He flew clear across a wide two way street. We could see the spot where he was dragged, the marks from the bike were still there.
